Ibiza Airport (IBZ)
Airport Information
(Ibiza, Balearic Islands, Spain)

Most visitors arrive on the Balearic island of Ibiza by air. With the Ibiza Airport (IBZ) conveniently located just over 7 km / 4.5 miles from Ibiza Town and next to San José, this base is a major gateway for European tourists who flock to the island during the summer months. During the high season, there are frequent connections with European cities, while services from Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona and Madrid are offered throughout the low season. Major airlines operating from Ibiza Airport are Iberia, Spanair and Air Europa.

The airport sees most of its seasonal traffic during the summer months, while it is often very quiet during the cooler winter period. In total, around 4.5 million passengers use Ibiza Airport annually, with more than 55,000 aircraft arriving and departing. Over 2,000 people work here, making the airport amongst Ibiza's biggest employers. There is just one terminal here, with limited yet adequate facilities.

Car hire is available from a selection of agencies that are represented at Ibiza Airport, with prominent roads close by including the PM-803, the PM-810 and the C-733, which heads northwards to Sant Joan de Labritja.

Taxis are available from outside the airport terminal to transfer passengers to Ibiza Town (Eivissa), a journey of about 20 minutes, or to other resorts around the island including the popular Playa d'en Bossa, San Antonio, Santa Eulalia, San José and San Juan. Alternatively, airport passengers can use the local bus service to Ibiza Town, an inexpensive transport option that takes about 30 minutes. Some resorts or hotels may offer transfer services from the airport, although it is essential that you enquire about these services prior to your arrival at Ibiza Airport.

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) Information: History and Facilities
Previously the Es Codolá military airfield, which was founded during the late 1930s, Ibiza Airport began serving international air traffic at the end of the 1940s, connecting many of Spain's islands and making it ideal for American stopovers. However, in just two years the airport had closed due to increasing costs, only to be expanded and renovated in the mid-1950s, and finally reopened in 1958, when Ibiza's Es Codolá Airport featured popular flights to Barcelona.

During the 1960s, the runway was improved and large aircraft were able to use Ibiza Airport. Passenger numbers began to rise as Ibiza was recognised as a world-class holiday resort and expansions of the terminal, airstrip and car park were necessary in both the 1970s and 1980s. More recently at Ibiza Airport, in 2002, the check-in facilities were modernised and soon after, a new area for rental cars was added.

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) is equipped with adequate facilities for a small air hub, including ATMs, currency exchange and a bank. Passengers are provided with a selection of shopping, including the large duty-free store of Aldeasa, the Ibiza Blau gift shop, and local Spanish delicacies at the Productos Gastronómicos.

Popular places to eat include the Illy Café, the Medas Beer bar, and a cake shop. Additional amenities at Ibiza Airport include postal facilities, a lost property office, a first-aid room, an abundance of travel agencies and tour operators, and a large conference hall facility with a capacity for 80 people.

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) Information: About Ibiza Tourism
Known as the party capital of Europe, Ibiza is one of Spain's famous Balearic Islands and attracts a mixed crowd to its miles of white sandy beaches, mega-clubs, historic capital and quaint whitewashed villages that make up the hinterland. The main resorts include Cala es Figuera, Cala Llonga, Platja des Canar and Platja des Niu Blau, where cafes, bars and shops are nearby.

While hordes of youngsters fly into Ibiza Airport (IBZ) during the summer months for its lively nightlife, which attracts some of the biggest DJs around, an older and more sedate crowd arrives on the island's shores during the low season, making many of the resorts ideal for families. Most of the activities on Ibiza revolve around the beach, although there are a number of sites of historic interest, such as the ancient city walls (Murallas de Ibiza), and some fascinating museums for those who want an insight into the island's intriguing past.
